“Resistance is futile” – The Borg
I am about to embark on an experiment and mission that goes against just about every popular and common trend on planet earth today. I am going to take my personal Facebook profile/account down. I am going to replace it with a fan page for The Vast Parlor that will be merged with the Vast Parlor twitter. Its not that I am anti social media at all, its just I am going to spend 2012 using it more to my advantage. I can not waste any more untold numbers of hours a day looking at goofy photos of people and their pets and videos of shit people say. I am admittedly very very very guilty of all the trappings of Facebook, yet I cant help but think that in todays culture, if we are going to commodity something, it should at least be something of substance. I suppose that is what has been nudging me more and more to this decision. I keep hearing a voice in my head that keeps saying “If you are going to spend that much time online, use it to create something of quality. Give something back to this world and the human condition. Stop pretending the trivia you get caught up in matters in the grand scheme of things” I cant help but think that the voice is right. There was a time I would spend hours writing, painting, photographing, editing photos while enjoying a stiff drink or glass of wine. Lately it has been turned into way too many hours of red bull and scrolling over things that are more disposable and filler. Its time to get back to demanding more quality in my own life, and those I chose to associate with. I am hitting the high stride of my life in a personal, professional, and creative level. Why not focus on that then see who is checking in where and with how many others.
That is not to say I wont be back one day. It could be a month it could be six months. it could be a year. It could be never, and I let the Vast Parlor do the talking and sharing. I have some amazing projects in the works I dont want to get into yet, but I look forward to focusing on them and sharing them with you here then anything else. Its time I get back to producing more things of quality and substance instead of adding to the fodder and back ground noise that seems to be filling up our generations ears and vision. I know its a tricky situation in todays culture where being connected is a form of currency. Where your very personal being is a commodity. Where we cease being our self, and slowly are become a synthesized, digital, and removed collection of people. Where we have five hundred people we would rather look at on a flat screen or mobile phone than see and meet in real life. I just have to get on my own trip for a bit. Watch this space.
